Where Is Your Focus?

"Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land." 1 Kings 17:7

Have you ever found yourself in a season of prosperity? I mean, EVERYTHING is going just right. Financially you are crushing it. You step out on the court or field and are continually breaking your PR's. All your relationships are on point from your mom to your significant other to your co-workers. It's as if everything is falling into place or in Elijah's case, his lap, just perfectly.

Elijah had just told the King at the time that there was going to be a drought for years to come, the only exception being at Elijah's word. Needless to say, he got out of there pretty quick after bringing such terrible news to the king. Now this would affect everyone, including Elijah, but God was faithful to Elijah and directed him to hide himself in a ravine. There he drank from the brook, and ravens brought him meat and bread every morning and evening. That's a pretty sweet gig if you ask me. God directed him to an incredible source of life in this time of drought. Then, some time later the brook dried up. The source that God himself directed Elijah to dried up.

Elijah then cried out to God, "How could you forsake me?" He remained by the brook until the last drop was consumed. He became weak and eventually took his last breath laying by the dried up brook, asking why God would leave him to die.

Except, that was not Elijah's response. He didn't cry out to God. He didn't remain by the dried up brook. He didn't die there. Yes, the brook dried up, but Elijah wasn't focused on the brook. He was focused on God, the creator of the source, not the source itself.

Where is your focus? Are you focused on the brook or the creator of the brook? Because ultimately, your focus will determine your decisions. If your focus shifts to anything other God (spouse, boyfriend, fiancé, job, sports, talents, etc.), you will begin to make decisions based on an imperfect and fleeting source. When the source begins to run dry, you will find yourself confused, trying to figure out how to fix something that you were never intended to fix. You become so focused on the source that you miss where the Creator is leading you. You, in turn, lose your effectiveness of reaching those around you.

When the brook dried up, God directed Elijah to a new source. Not only was he supplied with water and food, he was able to be the catalyst for the saving of a widow and her son. If his focus was on the brook, he would have missed the plan God had for him.

Where is your focus? Because your focus will determine your decisions.
