Speak Life
"With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness." James 3:1
I'm guilty. Some people do it behind others backs and some are more confrontational. Some are reserved about their displeasure of another and others are bold. I personally tend to always look for, and point out the flaws in others. The level of encouragement and life that comes out of my mouth versus criticism is pathetic. This verse points out the question, "How can I praise God in one moment and immediately turn around to attack the person next to me?"
It makes absolutely no sense to be upset with someone, all the while praising God. Every person around me has been created in the likeness of God (just like myself) and it is not my job to judge who deserves grace and who doesn't. When it comes down to it, the way I speak to others is a direct reflection of how I'm treating God. No, I might not be angry at God, but they are His sons and daughters just as much as I am! I can no longer live in a state of contradiction. I can't say that I love God and be finding all the reasons I don't like the person sitting next to me. I can't break out some Hillsong United or Elevation Worship while I'm angry with my brother or sister.
Instead, I'm going to change it up. It doesn't start with me choosing to love people though. It all starts with me choosing to have a daily relationship with my Heavenly Father. Out of the abundance of that relationship, I will naturally begin to love those around me. I will speak life, build others up and be an encourager.
