Doing v. Becoming

"WHAT DO YOU DO?"

The first time you meet someone there's a question that is bound to surface very quickly. You first exchange names and then quickly proceed to the age-old question, "What do you do?" The emotions that follow this question range greatly.

Here are a few examples :

  • You're young, but unlike most, you already know what you want to do with your life so the question excites you.
  • You're young, but you are in the majority and haven't exactly decided what you want to do you yet so you dread the question.
  • You've made it into the workforce, but aren't quite sure you've discovered the perfect fit yet so the question sort of produces embarrassment.
  • You're a little bit farther down the road and you're asking yourself, "How in the world did I end up here??" And in turn, you feel panicked.

We are trained from a very young age that what we do, becomes who we are. We spend a large chunk of our life searching and trying to figure out what we are supposed to do.

You are an electrician, a stock broker, a nurse, a businessman, a student, a teacher, a waiter, and the list can go on forever. We identify what we do with who we are. The problem is, that's not how it works. When we get who we are meant to be confused with what we do, we will never truly fulfill our purpose in life. We feel those feelings of dread, embarrassment, and panic when someone asks us the question "What do you do?."

WHO ARE YOU MEANT TO BE?

So the question remains, "If I'm not what I do, then who am I meant to be?"

We put such an emphasis on what we do that we very quickly and very easily can place our identity within it. Whenever our identity should be found in Christ. Now, I know this can sound cliché, but it's so true! We are first and foremost children of God called to spread the word to everyone around us. Our lives are our mission fields. When you find your identity in Christ and not in what you do, I can guarantee you will find an immediate weight lifted off your shoulders.

Don't identify who you are called to be with what you do. When we accept who God has created us to "BE," He can then begin to "DO" His work through us.

So I want to ask you not, "What do you do?" but instead...

WHO ARE YOU BECOMING?
